This course will explore Varuna in your personal chart and the charts of the other class members.

Varuna is probably the closest of the new consciousness energies to what we traditionally think of in the West as God, that all-knowing, all-powerful entity that exists silently behind everything. We can think of Varuna as the higher octave of Saturn. Both are supreme rulers, but where Saturn limits, controls, and structures, Varuna transmutes this energy into self-sufficient mastery.

Varuna is the god of the waters, which are our emotions, and he reminds us that they are deep and vast, and that we cannot change their nature. But he also encourages us that we have a soul of peace and love, and that wrath doesn’t suit us. In myth he is a king of gods and men and the universe, so he gives us a supreme sovereignty. This sovereignty is power in its own right, without the need of control or support.

Sovereignty is a dance between our intention and the collective psyche. We have to claim it and at the same time others have to agree to give it to us. We start this process by stepping forth in some way and saying ‘I can do this’. And then we have to do that thing and keep doing it over time. And this persistence builds an audience for our work or draws the populace for our kingdom. And that creates notability, where if people are asked ‘who to turn to’ for the thing that we do, everyone points to us.

When we embrace our sovereignty, Varuna enables us to oversee the world and make impartial judgments. In myth he has a thousand eyes and he enables us to know what is true in any situation, and what is morally right. He gives us a desire for justice and the ability to understand the Divine Order. And this enables us to gain unlimited knowledge and become a sort of sage in some area, if we do the work required to achieve this.

This unlimited knowledge can however blind us to the need to act in an immediate crisis, because of our understanding that in the long-term, action is in fact not necessary. We understand that the system will right itself. But this analysis doesn’t factor in the real-politic need to be seen to be in control. So, there can also be a loss of power or status bought about through inaction in a crisis. And in these instances, others who do act will likely be given the power in our stead.

So Varuna teaches us to stay engaged when the body-politic requires it, or lose sovereignty. But he also brings the knowledge of when to let-it-be, when the other person has to do the work and there is no point in trying to do it for them. When people ask us to do their work, sometimes this is part of our sovereign duty, and at other times we have to let people have their own learning experience.

Like Saturn, Varuna can place restrictions on us if we are not being true to ourselves or honest with others, but these dissipate when we forgive and align with spirit. He teaches us that we are dependent ultimately on both our heart and the fire of our soul. And he enables our immortality through the notability we achieve as we claim our sovereignty, enabling our deeds to live on in the collective consciousness.

If we are still at the personal planet level however, he can give us an unfounded sense of entitlement which, when it inevitably doesn’t work, shows us up as being incompetent and encourages us to blame others for our own shortfalls. At this level we may be overlooked or demoted because of this incompetence and will likely lament our losses and hold resentment as a result.

Once we are on the spiritual path however, Varuna teaches us to be sovereign, to stand in the center of our lives and own the results of our dance of karma and dharma without the need of outside support. At this level we know the right behavior and we feel the right time, so we are able to structure our lives, and be self-correcting.

And at the spiritually evolved level we can develop an inner conscious authority and learn to practice compassion in action. At this level we are focused on the higher good and we likely have a mastery of the flow of consciousness in our lives. Indeed, we may experience on-going revelations and are likely to become a sort of sage in some area.
