When the first outer planets were discovered, I'm talking about Uranus and Neptune, one way of understanding these new energies was the concept of a higher octave. A higher octave expresses the energy of an inner planet at a more spiritual level, so Uranus was said to be the higher octave of Mercury and Neptune the higher octave of Venus.
This idea of higher octaves has lost importance as our understanding of Uranus and Neptune has developed from empirical study, but I'm going to suggest that we can use it as a good shorthand way of understanding the new dwarfs.
Sedna - Ceres - Moon
If you've heard me talk on Sedna you'll know that I see the outermost dwarf planet as the higher octave of Ceres, which is the innermost and the only personal dwarf planet. And I see Ceres as the higher octave of the Moon.
Starting with the Moon, which we all know so intimately, gives us a good handle on the more esoteric energies of Ceres and Sedna. And I think we can clearly see the caring and nurturing energy in all three of these bodies, it just gets more impersonal as we go out.
Makemake - Uranus - Mercury
I'd like to suggest similarly that Makemake, who is a quick witted, a bit of a trickster and can give us a devotional focus bordering on genius, can be thought of as the higher octave of Uranus, which traditionally is the higher octave of Mercury. We see the focus on mental ability and trickster tendencies in all three of these bodies.
Haumea - Neptune - Venus
And that the Hawaiian goddess Haumea, who is alive with spirit and brings us in touch with the magical regenerative power in each moment, is the higher octave of Neptune, which traditionally is the higher octave of Venus. We see a love of beauty and of values in each of these planets, expressed in the personal realm by Venus, at a more spiritual level with Neptune, and at an even more esoteric level by Haumea.
Eris - Pluto - Mars
Eris, the truth-telling activist, is definitely a higher octave of her brother Mars. Both are warriors, but where Mars fights mundane enemies, Eris is working to free us through esoteric confrontations, where we have to stop being fooled, or fooling ourselves.
Traditionally Pluto is the higher octave of Mars, so we can also look at Eris as being the higher octave of Pluto. The Lord of the Underworld has an inclination of 17 degrees to the ecliptic and Eris has an inclination of 44 degrees, so she does cut through reality even stronger than Pluto and all three planets do share an assertiveness and a transformative ability.
Quaoar - Jupiter
And I suggest Quaoar, our first non-gendered planet, who comes from the Californian Indian people, and who dances and sings a new reality out of the chaos of existence, is perhaps the higher octave of Jupiter, with his love of the good life and his desire to constantly expand his domain.
Varuna - Saturn
And that Varuna, the Indian pre-Vedic creation deity, who talks of sovereignty and of ruling by mastery rather than control, is the higher octave of Saturn with his rules and control issues. Varuna's energy seems closest to what we in the West think of as God, the all-knowing cosmic entity that exists silently behind consciousness and events. He was demoted to the lord of waters by subsequent kingdoms however, so he also talks about the gain and loss of reputation, and the issue of immortality through fame.
At this stage I don't see the Plutinos, Ixion and Orcus, as being higher octaves, but let me know what you think.
