Mars quintile Eris

I hope you are enjoying today's Mercury sextile Jupiter. This is an aspect encouraging us to reach out and make new contacts to expand our lives in some way.

However Mercury is also conjunct the Sun and Saturn, so our ideas and communication could be overpowered by our will and our responsibilities, the demands of our lives feeling too important to waste our time with idle chitchat. If we are gentle with ourselves however, we might be able to negotiate a new beginning in the practical structure of our lives during this conjunction.

As well as the sextile to Jupiter, all three bodies are also semi-square Eris, our new goddess of diversity consciousness. She represents a fierce grace that insists on inclusiveness, so our will, responsibilities, and communication could be challenged to face up to something today. Or a revelation could push a restructuring of our lives.

We are lucky to also have Mars semisextile the conjunction and quintile Eris, so through taking action we can find an inner wisdom, or a guiding light, which can give us the power to face up to our karma, or do the restructuring that will set our life up for the next year.

Wizard of New Zealand

Case studies give us a way to see how these outer planet aspects can manifest practically, so let's look at this Mars quintile Eris transit in the life of British-born New Zealand eccentric, Ian Channel, who is the official 'Wizard of New Zealand’. He has Eris conjunct the ASC and square his MC.

At 42 he moved to Christchurch in New Zealand and began to speak on a ladder in Cathedral Square. The city council attempted to have him arrested, but he became so popular that they made the square a public speaking area instead. Here we see the transformative effect of Eris on the ASC. 

Wearing his costume as a false prophet of the Church of England or his wizard's pointy hat, he has been speaking there at lunchtimes in the summer months for over 40 years, becoming a beloved local figure.

Some of his favourite topics included the importance of freedom of speech, environmental conservation, the role of technology in society, and the need for creativity and imagination in daily life. He also addressed political and social issues, such as government policies and societal norms. Overall, the wizard used his platform to engage with the public and spark thought-provoking conversations about a wide range of topics.

On the 6th of October 1990, the Prime Minister of New Zealand appointed him the official Wizard of New Zealand. On the day of the appointment, transiting Mars in his 3rd House was in a close quintile with his Eris. The appointment was a recognition that his work with communication was so deeply integrated with his inner wisdom, that he had become a national treasure.

So today, we have the opportunity to deeply integrate what we're doing, with our inner wisdom. Our responsibilities and our will are likely challenging, or being challenged by, this inner wisdom in some way. But if we take action to honour and express that wisdom it will empower us and set us up to deal with our responsibilities in a new way over this coming year.
