The Astrology of Haumea

This is the first of a series of textbooks on the astrology of the new dwarf planets, based on the research at the Dwarf Planet University.

Probably the most valuable section is the house interpretations, looking at how Haumea manifests in our daily lives with example case studies.

There is also a workbook to locate and on-board this new energy in your chart. And a section introducing each of the dwarf planets to put Haumea in context.

Saturn trine Varuna

I hope you are enjoying today's close trine between Saturn and Varuna, our extraordinary dwarf planet of mastery consciousness, which is stationary direct at 9 degrees of Leo. This is a graceful and rather magnificent transit that carries the genuine promise of earned mastery, sovereign authority, and — perhaps unexpectedly — the liberating gift of laughter. This trine came within a 1 degree orb just over a week ago, it is exact today, and it will go out of orb on the 11th May.

To understand what this trine is offering, we need to understand both players. Saturn, of course, is our great planet of structure, discipline, time, and consequence. He is the teacher who insists that nothing worth having comes without real effort, and that the boundaries we work within are often the very things that allow genuine mastery to develop. And we can look at Varuna as Saturn's higher octave. Both are supreme rulers. But where Saturn limits, controls, and structures, Varuna transmutes that same energy into something far more luminous: self-sufficient, self-authorising mastery. Where Saturn asks for permission, Varuna simply knows.

In a trine, these two planets find a natural flow between their energies. There is no friction, no forced adjustment, no crisis of pressure. Saturn offers the discipline, the patience, the willingness to do the work over time. Varuna offers the sovereign authority, the thousand-eyed knowing, the soul of peace from which genuine mastery flows. Together, right now, they are offering us something we genuinely need.

Laughter Sets Us Free

Before we go any further into what this transit means, we need to talk about laughter. Varuna was discovered at 11 degrees Cancer, and the Sabian Symbol for that degree — channelled by clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler and astrologer Marc Edmund Jones — is a beautiful and rather surprising image: a clown caricaturing well-known personalities. The keynote, as interpreted by Dane Rudhyar, is the value of humour in developing objectivity and independence of mind. And the key word Rudhyar gives us is deconditioning.

This is no accident. Every degree of the zodiac that Varuna might have been discovered at, and it arrived at the degree of the laughing, irreverent, liberating clown. The symbolism is telling us something essential about how mastery consciousness actually develops: not through solemn accumulation of importance, but through the willingness to laugh — at the social structures around us, at the roles we have been handed, at our own pomposity and pretension.

Laughter deconditions. All of our experience has shaped us — our parents, our teachers, our culture, the particular society we were born into. We carry that conditioning in our bodies as tension and in our psyches as fixed attitudes. These fixed attitudes, unexamined, control our every move more than we usually realise. They are the invisible bars of the cages we live inside. And laughter is one of the most powerful keys we have to release them. By laughing at our own petty habits and mannerisms, and at the institutions and figures we have been conditioned to revere without question, we enable a deconditioning process that genuinely frees us to claim our sovereignty.

With Saturn trining Varuna right now, we have a genuinely supportive sky for this kind of deconditioning work. Saturn's discipline applied to the practice of not taking ourselves too seriously. Saturn's willingness to do the work turned toward the inner work of laughing at our own pomposity. This is not self-deprecation or self-diminishment — it is the lightness that makes genuine mastery possible, the ability to hold our own importance lightly enough that it doesn't calcify into ego-rigidity.

Engaging When We Know Better

There is another teaching woven into Varuna's mythology that this Saturn trine is illuminating, and it is a subtler and perhaps more challenging one.

Varuna has a thousand eyes. He sees everything, knows everything, understands the divine order of things with a clarity that most of us can only approach in our most luminous moments. And this very omniscience carries within it a particular danger — the danger of inaction in a crisis. Because when you truly understand how a system works at the deepest level, you can also see that in the long run, it will right itself. You know that the drama playing out in front of you will resolve, that the intervention being demanded of you is not, from a higher perspective, actually necessary.

And yet, the myth teaches us clearly that this wisdom, unchecked, can cost us our sovereignty entirely. If we remain inactive in a crisis — even for impeccably good metaphysical reasons — others who do act will be given the power in our stead. The body politic, the community, the organisation, the relationship: none of these operate at the level of Varuna's highest understanding. They operate at the level of visible, engaged, responsive action. And if we are not present there, in the place where presence is required, we lose the standing that our genuine mastery has built. The sovereignty slips away not because we were wrong, but because we were absent.

At the same time, the other edge of this teaching is equally important. Not every demand placed on us by the collective deserves our sovereign engagement. Some requests — even urgent, emotionally loaded ones — are not ours to answer. Some people who come to us for help are not actually asking us to do the work for them; they are asking us to do it instead of them, which is a very different thing. True sovereignty includes the knowledge of when to say, with genuine compassion and without guilt, "I can't do this for you. You'll need to do it yourself." Like the guru who turns away the seeker not yet ready for the teaching, this is not rejection but wisdom.

Saturn trining Varuna is giving us both of these awarenesses simultaneously. The trine's flowing energy makes it easier than usual to hold both poles of this teaching in balance — to know when to show up fully and engage, and when to step back and allow others their own process. Saturn's grounded practicality helps us feel the difference in the body. Varuna's omniscient knowing tells us what is actually true in the situation.

On the Spiritual Path

For those of us already working consciously with our inner life, this Saturn trine Varuna is a moment of genuine consolidation and grace. Something that you have been building — a body of work, an area of expertise, a quality of presence and authority — is finding firmer ground under this sky. Saturn is helping to stabilise and structure what Varuna's mastery consciousness has been developing, and the trine means this support arrives without the usual Saturnian demand for struggle. Things can simply settle and clarify.

The deconditioning gift of the Sabian Symbol is particularly rich for those on the path. You have likely already done a good deal of work releasing inherited belief systems and social conditioning. But Varuna's clown invites us to go deeper and lighter simultaneously — to notice where we have perhaps taken our spiritual mastery a little too seriously, where the role of "someone who knows things" has become its own subtle form of conditioning. Even our wisdom can calcify into pomposity if we are not careful. The laughter the Sabian Symbol points toward is not mockery but medicine: the willingness to caricature our own most cherished positions, to see where we have allowed our sovereign knowing to harden into dogma.

The dance between engagement and non-interference is also particularly alive at the spiritual level. You likely feel the pull of Varuna's higher understanding — the sense that in the long run, things will resolve, that the system has its own wisdom, that not every crisis requires your intervention. This knowing is real and valuable. And Saturn is reminding you, with great practicality and care, that your sovereign presence is also required in the world where others are operating. Show up. Engage. Bring your mastery into the visible, the relational, the immediate — not because you have abandoned your higher perspective, but because the dance of sovereignty requires both the throne and the marketplace.

Equally, this is a powerful moment to practise the discernment of when not to engage. When someone comes to you with a demand that is not genuinely yours to meet, you have, right now, excellent support for offering the loving no. The trine makes it easier to hold both compassion and boundary in the same gesture, without collapse into either resentment or over-giving.

At the spiritually evolved level of this transit, we glimpse what Varuna most fully offers: the capacity to focus on the higher good with a clarity born of genuine mastery, to practice compassion in action and perhaps to become — in some area, however apparently modest — a sage whose knowing serves those who seek it. This is the dance that Saturn and Varuna are supporting right now. The sky is behind you. Step forward. May you laugh freely, claim your sovereignty bravely, and let your deeds live on in the collective consciousness.

Dear Alan,

Happily, I have Mercury at 10 Sagittarius. This transit of Saturn trine Varuna creates a grand trine in fire and activity. Perhaps this has to do with embodiment and transcendence . Bringing enlightenment to self and others.

We all work over lifetimes to embody our highest spiritual qualities. At this time our family is recognizing a lineage and is focusing on supportive action .

I'm unsure of the presence of the clown and lightness quality. Perhaps it relates to the joyful laughter of the bodhisattva.
