The Astrology of Haumea

This is the first of a series of textbooks on the astrology of the new dwarf planets, based on the research at the Dwarf Planet University.

Probably the most valuable section is the house interpretations, looking at how Haumea manifests in our daily lives with example case studies.

There is also a workbook to locate and on-board this new energy in your chart. And a section introducing each of the dwarf planets to put Haumea in context.

Uranus sesquiquadrate Mani

I hope you are enjoying this month's sextile between Uranus and Neptune, which is exact today. Our intuition and our spiritual consciousness are working together. This sextile is part of a bigger aspect pattern with Pluto sextile Neptune and trine Uranus - with both these aspects becoming exact over the next week. And, at the same time, Jupiter will be opposite Pluto, and so trine Neptune and sextile Uranus. Which means that we're in a time of balancing our expansion with our power to transform our lives, and this balance is being assisted by the flow between our intuition and our spiritual consciousness.

Uranus is also sesquiquadrate Mani, our new planet that I'm tentatively calling love-of-life dreamtime consciousness, at 20 degrees of Capricorn. Yes, we have a new planet in our constellation of consciousness, and this is a beautiful moment to meet him — because he is activating the sky right now in a way that has something important to say to all of us.

Mani is the 'Man in the Moon' in the Norse mythology, driving his chariot across the heavens, guiding the moon's course, and helping humanity keep track of time. He has such a love of humanity that he has to be chased across the sky by the wolves of darkness, so he doesn't get distracted by his desire to help individual people from his mission to provide light and cyclic timing to everyone. Mani is our new planet this year at the Uni, and I have just led an NCGR Research Project to work out the astrological meaning.

Mani's defining quality, at his highest expression, is a profound and enduring love of life and of humanity. As researcher Sue Minahan so beautifully puts it, Mani represents "the memory of our will to pursue and develop the higher aspect where we love life, and care for people by giving what is true from ourselves." This is not a flashy or dramatic love. It is constant, like the moon itself — waxing and waning but always present, reliably returning, impossible to extinguish. As revealed by the research project, Mani is a glorious, gentle, and compelling guide: compassionate, protective, and deeply connected to the human experience across time.

In myth, Mani drives his chariot across the sky pursued by the wolf Hati, whose name translates as Hatred — the very opposite of everything Mani represents. He does not stop. He does not turn to fight. He drives on, relentlessly, because the light must continue, the cycles must be maintained, and the love of life must keep moving forward regardless of what chases it. There is something tremendously courageous in this quiet, unceasing motion.

Mani was discovered at 24 degrees Sagittarius, and the Sabian Symbol for that degree is a bluebird perched on the gate of a cottage. The bluebird is a spiritual messenger bearing blessings from a higher dimension. The gate of a cottage is a threshold — the liminal point between the vast unknown and the warmth of home. Researcher Eileen Bowden noted that this tells us Mani is the reward that meets every effort at integration into a social environment, for those who remain true to themselves. It speaks of a spiritually oriented mind, of peace and happiness achieved not through great drama but through the patient, genuine, continuous practice of being authentically ourselves in relationship with others. The attainment of harmony. Finding beauty in every moment.

The numerology adds another layer. Mani's minor planet number, 307261, reduces to 19, then to 1 — a 19/1 vibration, the number of those who have already travelled the full cycle of experience (the wisdom of 9) and are now reborn into a new beginning (the independence of 1). This is not a naive first step. It is the beginning that carries everything that came before. Mani in a chart signals a consciousness that has integrated the darkness and is learning, through that integration, to stand in its own light.

Mani also keeps very particular company in his myth. He rescued two children from neglect and abuse, taking them under his protection and setting them to work with him in the sky. Partnership, care for the vulnerable, and the active nurturing of those who have been harmed are woven into his mythological DNA. He is, in Alison Glennie's beautiful formulation, a guardian of the soul — a parent by proxy, a godparent who shadows our journey and guides us toward the light even when we cannot see it ourselves.

This is the planet now in sesquiquadrate to Uranus. The sesquiquadrate is a 135-degree aspect, a square and a half, belonging to the eighth-harmonic family. It carries a quality of agitated, pressurised energy that is harder to ignore than a square and less dramatically confrontational. It generates a kind of restless, crackling friction — the sensation of being pushed toward something new without quite knowing yet what form it should take. It is the aspect of breakthrough-in-progress, the creative discomfort that precedes genuine insight.

Uranus, of course, is our planet of sudden awakening, radical innovation, and the kind of intuitive lightning bolt that reorganises our understanding of everything in a single moment. He liberates. He disrupts. He pulls us loose from the comfortable repetition of the familiar and catapults us into the genuinely new.

The sesquiquadrate from Mani to Uranus has been within a 1 degree orb for the past week, it will be exact on the 26th July, and go out of orb in the middle of August. With this transit we are being invited into a wonder-filled adventure — an encounter between Uranian electric awakening and Mani's deep, moonlit, timeless knowing. Uranus is providing the spark. Mani is providing the depth in which that spark can illuminate something real. Together, right now, they are asking us to stay true to ourselves — as the bluebird on the gate of the cottage suggests — even as new and unexpected intuitions arrive. To love life fiercely and openly, even when the wolf is close. To let the cycles turn and trust what each turning reveals.

If we are not yet consciously working with Mani's energy, this sesquiquadrate with Uranus may feel rather more jarring than wondrous. Uranus pushes for liberation and change, and if we have been maintaining a comfortable emotional status quo, that push can feel destabilising. We may find ourselves reacting impulsively, as though the wolf at our heels has gotten just a little too close. Mani at the unconscious level can generate a persecution complex — the sense that we are being chased, that something is always gaining on us, that we cannot afford to slow down or look inward. The sesquiquadrate activates this restlessness and adds Uranus's urgency to it. At this level, the invitation is simply to notice the feeling of being chased, and to ask honestly what it is we are running from. Because Mani's teaching is that we do not need to outrun our shadow. We need to circle around the dark side of the moon and integrate what we find there.

For those of us already on the spiritual path and open to our Uranian intuition, this sesquiquadrate is genuinely exciting. Uranus is cracking open something in the area of our life where Mani sits, and Mani's moonlit depth is ready to illuminate what emerges. You may find yourself receiving insights and intuitions over these weeks that feel larger than your everyday consciousness — glimpses of patterns that have been running across lifetimes rather than just this one, sudden realisations about cycles that have finally reached their turning point. Mani is associated with the kind of emotional timing that operates beyond the ordinary twenty-four-hour clock, attuned to what the Aboriginal tradition calls Dreamtime — the deeper dimension of no-time in which past, present, and future are available simultaneously.

Pay attention to your dreams during this period. Mani is tied to dreams, visions, and the hidden arts, and the sesquiquadrate with Uranus is activating this dimension of his influence quite specifically. The bluebird of the discovery Sabian Symbol appears in dreams as a messenger — and the cottage gate it perches on suggests that whatever arrives through your dreamlife right now is pointing you toward a threshold. Something is asking to be crossed. You are being shown where to go next.

You might also notice during these weeks an acceleration — Mani's myth involves the chariot driver pushing forward relentlessly, faster and faster, driven by both love and the necessity of keeping the cycles on track. Uranus's sesquiquadrate adds to this urgency. There may be a sense of things moving more quickly than usual, of a destiny being compacted into a shorter period than expected. Trust this. It is not anxiety. It is the sense of a larger timetable asserting itself.

The key practical guidance for those on the path is to stay true to yourself and to your love of life even as the disruption arrives. Mani's deeper teaching, as Agnes Szabo of the research project notes, is that he is responsible for inner emotional timing — not the external ticking of the clock, but the felt, cyclical, rhythmic intelligence that knows when we are ready for the next stage. Uranus may be presenting the next stage rather suddenly. Mani is asking you to receive it with the whole of your emotional and spiritual being, not just your intellect. Let it move you. Let the cycles turn. And remember that after every personal Ragnarok — every moment of old-world destruction and radical reset — there is, as Eileen Bowden reminds us, a new green earth, and those who love life are the ones who inherit it.

The numerological 19/1 at the heart of Mani speaks to this directly: you are not naive. You have already been through the cycle. You already carry the wisdom of everything that has come before. What is being reborn in you now, under this Uranian pressure, is something earned and real. Let it emerge. Let the bluebird deliver its message. Step through the gate.

New Moon - Mani Special

We're currently in a break on the classes for the Mercury retrograde, and the courses which are starting after the break, Salacia and Varuna, are full, so grab this opportunity to secure your place on the next available course, Mani, and to encourage you I have a New Moon Special deal. Be quick to grab one!

Over eight weeks, drawing on the research of the NCGR Mani Research Project, you will discover Mani's house position, aspects, and transits in your own chart through live Zoom sessions, instructional webinars, and consciousness exercises designed to help you onboard his loving, timekeeping, dream-guiding energy into your actual lived experience. The new tutor support program means that wherever you are with your understanding of astrology, there is help available to fully participate.

This is the course for those who want to understand the deeper emotional timing at work across their lives — the moonlit, cyclical, love-of-life consciousness that Mani has been quietly stewarding from the outer reaches of our solar system, waiting to be met. It starts after the Venus and Mercury retrograde in October, so it is perfectly timed to make best use of the direct inner planet cycles and give you a good preparation for the retrograde Mars at the beginning of next year.

And a final note that with the Mani course we're back to having two Zoom time options, because I will have finished my current travelling. However the 9pm GMT sessions have filled up quickly since I sent out my email newsletter about Mani a couple of days ago, and as a result the 9pm GMT Mani Zooms are now full with 25 students. Unfortunately these are the only sessions that work for Americans - unless you are a night-owl - so, if you live in the States and are desperate to attend this course, we encourage you to enrol on the 7am GMT Zooms, and put a note on your enrolment that you'd like to go on the wait-list for the 9pm GMT Zooms. (We don't guarantee this is possible, but we expect to be able to move a few students over, and, if we can't, at least you'll be able to participate by watching the Zoom recordings).

May you love life fiercely, trust the moonlit cycles, and let the bluebird of enlightenment find you at the gate.
