The Astrology of Haumea

This is the first of a series of textbooks on the astrology of the new dwarf planets, based on the research at the Dwarf Planet University.

Probably the most valuable section is the house interpretations, looking at how Haumea manifests in our daily lives with example case studies.

There is also a workbook to locate and on-board this new energy in your chart. And a section introducing each of the dwarf planets to put Haumea in context.

Quaoar bi-quintile Uranus!

8 min read

I hope you are enjoying today's Sun sextile Jupiter. These next couple of days are a great opportunity to expand our world in some meaningful way. And this is leading us into Mars trine Saturn over the weekend, so we'll have a chance to take action to materialise the opportunities we find in the next couple of days.

Pluto meanwhile will turn direct on Thursday/Friday, adding the empowerment of being able to transform our lives through a psychological understanding of who and where we are. This energy has been turned inward, fine-tuning our resourcefulness for the past few months, and now it can be directed out into the world to change our lives. However remember that Venus is newly retrograde so the review process will continue that we've recently started in our values and relationships, but you may be able to take some action and make some changes as part of that process.

Pluto's Two New Brothers - Zoom Talk

To celebrate Pluto turning direct I am doing a Zoom talk to the Metropolitan Atlanta Astrological Society - which you are welcome to attend for free - on Pluto's two Brothers: Pluto's Lawless Brother, Ixion (our new Seeker Consciousness) and Pluto's Straight-Talking Brother, Orcus (our new Karmic Consciousness). The talk is on this Thursday 15th, at 7.30pm EDT (11.30pm in London, & 10.30am on Friday in Sydney). You can find the Zoom link to attend this event below.

Grounding Our Spirit Adventure

Meanwhile Saturn, which we know is in Aries, as well as trining Mars, is also closely squaring Quaoar, our new planet of spirit consciousness, at 11 degrees of Capricorn. While Quaoar is closely bi-quintile Uranus in Gemini. Quaoar enables us to find a practice that brings spirit into matter. In myth Quaoar sings and dances the world into existence, and song and dance are practices that bring spirit into matter. These days, anything can be a spiritual practice. So, with the bi-quintile to Uranus we might find ourselves opening our spiritual practice to surprising new influences, or embarking on a spiritual adventure in some way. While the square to Saturn is asking us to keep it real and to ground this spiritual practice in reality.

Before we go further, it is worth understanding a little more about who Quaoar is, because he is one of the more quietly extraordinary new planets in our solar system. Quaoar is the higher octave of Jupiter. Both planets speak of expansion and new possibilities, but where Jupiter expands through a kind of dumb luck and a hunger for more, Quaoar repolarises that energy into something far more conscious and precise. Quaoar turns each moment into a dynamic meditation, where we can see the opportunities available and deftly act on them in real time. Quaoar is smart luck — the luck that comes not from blind fortune but from being genuinely present and spiritually attuned to what each moment is offering.

Quaoar's energy expresses itself as the song and dance we tell ourselves about our lives — the spirit-story that underpins who we are. We naturally want to be the centre of our story, and Quaoar is the planet that either helps us tell that story with genuine spiritual depth and presence, or, when he is not being worked with consciously, lets it collapse into a soap opera: a drama that is real enough but lacks the connection to spirit that would give it meaning and direction.

With Saturn now squaring Quaoar and Uranus biquintile, both of these dimensions are very much alive in the sky. The square to Saturn came within a one degree orb at the beginning of this month, it has been exact for the past couple of days, and it will go out of orb on the 24th. So the pressure we have been feeling to keep our spiritual practice real over the past few days will ease by the end of next week.

While the biquintile to Uranus came within a one degree orb on the 25th of September, it will be exact on the 27th of October, and go out of orb in mid November. So just as the square to Saturn eases, the biquintile to Uranus will be at its most potent — meaning we might be able to set up our spiritual adventure or opening for later this month and early next month, by being spiritually responsible in the next week. This timing is actually quite elegant. Saturn is providing the discipline and the reality check right now, while Uranus is building toward the breakthrough that will follow once the grounding work is done.

If we are not yet consciously working with Quaoar's energy, the Saturn square could be feeling like an unwelcome constraint — a set of external rules, obligations, or practical demands that seem to block or diminish whatever creative or spiritual impulse is alive in us. At this level, Quaoar's shadow can make us a doomsayer about the possibility of things improving, or lead us to try and control others through our story rather than simply living it with integrity. We might find that our spirit seems to be suppressed by the very structures and regulations Saturn represents, rather than understanding that Saturn is simply asking us to find a way to bring the practice into the real, embodied life we are actually living — not a fantasy version of it.

The Uranian biquintile may also be felt at this level as a kind of scattered restlessness — an appetite for the new and the surprising that jumps from one exciting possibility to the next without ever landing deeply enough in any of them to build a genuine practice. The biquintile's urgency amplifies this if we are not grounded.

For those of us on the spiritual path, the interplay between these two aspects is genuinely instructive and quite beautifully timed. Saturn squaring Quaoar is not an obstacle to our spiritual life — it is a quality check on it. It is asking us whether the song and dance we are telling ourselves about our spiritual development is actually grounded in real, consistent, embodied practice, or whether it is a compelling story that has not yet found its way into the material world. Saturn in Aries demands that our spiritual impulse be active, specific, and real. He will not accept an aspiration that never quite becomes a habit. And Quaoar, as the planet of practice, is the perfect energy to receive this demand. The question Saturn is asking right now is simple and honest: what do you actually do, regularly, to bring spirit into your physical life?

This is worth sitting with. Because Quaoar's teaching is that anything can be a spiritual practice — meditation, yes, but also a morning walk, a creative ritual, the way we cook, the way we move, the quality of attention we bring to our work. Saturn is not restricting the form. He is simply requiring that the form exist. That something be real and recurring and grounded enough to be called a practice rather than just an intention.

The practical guidance for this week, while the square is still close, is to identify or strengthen exactly this. What is the practice? Name it. Give it a time and a place in your actual life. Let Saturn's Aries energy be the spine that holds Quaoar's song and dance upright in the world. Because once you have that foundation in place, the Uranian biquintile reaching its peak at the end of the month can do something genuinely exciting with it.

The biquintile belongs to the fifth harmonic family — aspects of mastery, creative urgency, and the need to release something that has been developing into fuller expression. Uranus in Gemini is already hungry for the new, the surprising, the mentally electrifying. In biquintile to Quaoar, it is offering to inject exactly this quality into our spiritual practice. Once the Saturn square has done its grounding work, Uranus can open the practice to dimensions we did not anticipate — a new teacher or teaching, an unexpected community, a creative form of spiritual expression that arrives from a direction we were not looking, a synchronicity that reorganises our understanding of what our practice is actually for.

The invitation between now and the end of October is therefore a clear and rather beautiful sequence: do the Saturnian work first. Make the practice real and grounded and honest this week, while the square is still exact and the pressure is still present and useful. Then, as the square eases and the Uranian biquintile peaks, hold the practice lightly enough to let yourself be genuinely surprised. Let Uranus in Gemini bring in the unexpected angle, the new idea, the spiritual adventure that you could not have planned for. Quaoar as smart luck works precisely in this way — present in the moment, attuned to what each moment is offering, ready to act on the opportunity when it arrives. The Saturn square is building the presence. The Uranian biquintile is bringing the opportunity.

At the most spiritually evolved level of this pattern, we can see the song and dance of spirit in everything — in the grounding demand of Saturn and in the liberating surprise of Uranus equally. We begin to understand ourselves as part of a rich chorus of spirit that underpins the physical world, and we see both the larger spirit-story that humanity is telling and the specific, grounded, joyfully adventurous part we are playing in it. We manifest spirit as required to bring order out of chaos. We create harmony, not by controlling the story, but by being genuinely present in each moment of it. That is Quaoar at its most beautiful. And this sky, properly worked with, is a very good way to get there.
