•At somewhere between 1,180 to 2,360 km in diameter, Sedna is almost as big as Pluto. And with an orbital speed of 1.04 km/s, it is the slowest of all the planets.

•It’s rotation speed however of 10 hours is faster than most of the other planets and interestingly, is the same as Saturn’s, which for many centuries was the previous outer limit of the solar system.

•Sedna is probably made up of an equal mixture of ice and rock. It is red in colour and may be covered with about a metre of hydrocarbon sludge, or tholin. This sludge is produced when the Sun's ultraviolet radiation and charged particles alter the chemical bonds between the atoms, which is a "space weathering" process.

•A similar space weathering process occurs on the 200-kilometre-wide centaur, Pholus, which is also very red. Pholus has an orbit which crosses the orbits of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, so the centaur has the ability to maintain alive the illusion (Neptune) and achieve the necessary discipline (Saturn) to make a dream come true. It is about illumination and growth, but often very spontaneously and unconsciously.

•And finally models of internal heating via radioactive decay suggest that Sedna might support a subsurface ocean of liquid water, like Ceres.

•So in Sedna we have a planet whose orbit encompasses a far bigger and more spiritual perspective than any of the other inner planets. An impersonal energy, which is however nurturing and speaks of progress and of growth through a weathering process over time, with a Saturnian day-to-day perspective, which is practised very slowly and deliberately.

Sedna Myth

•Sedna as a beautiful maiden who rejects marriage proposals from the hunters of her village. When an unknown hunter appears, Sedna's father agrees to give her to him as wife in return for fish. Sedna's father gives Sedna a sleeping potion and gives her to the hunter who takes her to a large nest on a cliff, revealing his true form: a great bird-spirit. She wakes surrounded by birds. Her father then leaves in his kayak to rescue her from the floating ice-island where she is imprisoned while the bird creature is away.

•The creature, enraged by her disappearance, calls to a spirit of the sea to help him. The sea spirit locates the kayak with the two humans aboard and creates huge waves to kill them. Her father throws Sedna overboard in the hope that this will appease the angry god. Sedna clings to the kayak but her father grabs a little axe and chops three of her fingers off before striking her on the head. The three fingers each become a different species of seal. The stroke to her head sends Sedna to the ocean floor where she resides, commanding the animals of the sea.”

•We can see the bones of the planetary archetype here. Various unconscious experiences, which come from our heredity, will push us to a painful crisis of transcendence, where we are forced to let go of our old spiritual framework and transcend to a new consciousness.

Astrological Meaning

•Legendary humanistic astrologer Dane Rudhyar posited that there were three different levels on which each planet could operate depending on the evolution of our consciousness. The vast majority of us are at the beginners' level and we will manifest the energy of Sedna from a position of being buried in the dysfunctional swamp of density.

•Largely unconscious of the all encompassing spiritual energy of the planet, at this level we’ll likely only notice it when it jolt’s into our reality to correct some imbalance in our lives by bringing illness or victimisation, like the judder strip on the road, to steer us back onto the true path of our soul’s destiny. And we all start life unconscious and have to develop consciousness as we grow, so we all experience the base level of Sedna.

•At the intermediate level, we tire of density and the grief it creates, and we start a spiritual journey to get out of the swamp. This is the key to working with Sedna, she wants to get us on a spiritual path, or for us to recognise the spiritual path we’re on. Then she hits us with transcendent crises, experiences which force us to let go and rise above them, resulting in a huge growth to a new level of consciousness. There is no choice with these crises and the more we try and solve them the more we will get hurt.

•At this juncture in human evolution, few people use their planets at the spiritual level, but such people are wonderful to be around. The well-known pattern with the other planets is that the spiritual level is vastly different from the two previous levels and this is also true for Sedna. Here the struggle of the beginners level is gone, as are the transcendental crises of the intermediate level. At this level everything Saturnian is meaningless and yet everything Sednian has it’s place.

Higher Octave of Ceres

The newly re-classified dwarf planet, Ceres, can be thought of as the higher octave of the Moon, meaning that the emotional security of the Moon is transmuted to a sustenance and nurturing of our spiritual security and sense of place on Planet Earth with Ceres.

This is very similar to Sedna, only Sedna operates on a far vaster scale, so we may find that Sedna is the higher octave of Ceres. The spiritual security and sense of place on Planet Earth with Ceres, is transmuted into transpersonal nurturing of our spirituality and sense of place in the evolutionary cycle with Sedna.
