I hope you are enjoying the Mars conjunct Uranus we're having this week. This may be coming with some unwelcome disruptions, or seemingly crazy actions, but if we're open to the new and roll with the surprises, this can be a time of opportunity and adventure.
Venus is also conjunct Varuna for the next couple of days, at 8 degrees Leo, with both trine the North Node in Aries. So this is likely to be a time when we can stand on our experience and hold true to our values, as we make new karma and fulfil our destiny.
Varuna gets a bad rap because of his position as the higher octave of Saturn. We think of Saturn as restriction and responsibility, which doesn't encourage us to explore a more spiritual level of this energy. But the key to understanding Varuna is that he provides a release from all that Saturnian baggage, enabling us to play by our own rules, instead of submitting to external rules.
Doing our own thing is scary, because we are solely responsible, rather than responsible within a 'permission structure'. But we learn to do this bit-by-bit over time, so frequently we won't even notice it happening. It is just the thing we are devoted to doing, and, as we get experience, we see how we can adjust the rules to help our process.Â
Paloma Picasso
Let's see how this conjunction manifests in a case study to understand how we can do it in our lives. Paloma Picasso was one of Pablo Picasso's three children, and she had Venus, Varuna, and her Sun, all closely conjunct her Descendant. This tells us that the Venus-Varuna conjunction will be expressed through her ego and her one to one relationships.
She was a style trend-setter. She created a jewelry and perfume line from her own original and bold brand of chic. Over the years, her company enlarged their line to include a fragrance, eyewear, home accessories, fabrics and wallpaper.Â
Her husband was also her business partner and together, over 26 years, they built the fashion and perfume business up to an estimated yearly sales of $825 million. She also had a large inheritance from her father, making her one of the world's richest women.
Her famous mother and father.
While most of us don't have the advantage of having a famous father, she still had to emerge from his shadow to claim her personal sovereignty.
‘My parents always taught me that I have to be my own person. At the same time when you have such parents and such a name you don’t want people to associate the two. When I got to be 14 or 15 it started making me feel very nervous. For a number of years I wouldn’t touch a pencil for anything other than writing, I was so afraid I might become an artist.’
The work to claim her sovereignty ramped up at 24, when she wasn't included in his will, because her parents never married during their ten year de facto relationship. She fought a long legal battle to be recognised as one of his heirs and, at 29, inherited $650 million.Â
So, we can see how the Varuna-Venus conjunction enabled her to make her own rules, although the social rules excluded her. And so over the next couple of days we also have this opportunity. The conjunction is infusing our spiritual desire to make our own rules with what we really love about life. So this is a good time to find the courage to claim our personal sovereignty.
Varuna Scholarships
Working together with a supportive team can help in this process, so I have a last couple of scholarships to encourage you to join us on Varuna. This course is starting in the next course-block after the coming Mercury retrograde has passed. Grabbing one of these scholarships would be a great way to use the current conjunction.
Join us if you can on Varuna, and thanks for your work embracing these new aspects of consciousness.Â
